Measurements & Your First Order

What is your return policy?

Every Black Lapel garment is made just for you from scratch, to your measurements, and with care. Because each piece is custom-made, we don’t follow a one-size-fits-all return policy. Instead, we focus on making sure you end up with something you love.

Here’s what we offer:

  • Complimentary alterations on your first order to fine-tune the fit.
  • Remakes when alterations aren’t enough.
  • Returns in rare cases when we’ve truly exhausted all other solutions.

We know returns at big-box retailers often come with a “free” label, but the reality is, those costs are quietly built into their prices. At Black Lapel, we take a different approach: we aim to be transparent about what it takes to deliver high-quality, small-batch custom garments. That means we focus our resources on getting your fit right from the start and seek to offer solutions that prioritize your satisfaction without inflating our prices for everyone.

How do I measure myself at home? Do I need help from a friend?

You don’t need a measuring tape, a friend or tailor’s expertise—just take our short sizing survey.

We’ll ask a few simple questions about your height, weight, body shape, and fit preferences, then use our data-backed algorithm to generate a custom fit. It’s quick, accurate, and designed to get you a great fit without the guesswork.

How do I find or generate my sizing?

You can manage your Patterns in your account or on any item in your cart.

Our sizing survey is quick, simple, and impressively accurate—no tape measure, tailor, or professional fitting required. In just a few minutes, it uses your basic inputs like height, weight, and body shape, paired with our proprietary algorithm built on thousands of successful custom fits, to generate your personalized size profile.

Want extra precision? You can also add self-measurements for even more accuracy. It's a smarter way to start custom—without the hassle.

Do you offer in-person or virtual measurement appointments?

Our sizing survey remains the easiest and most reliable way to get started. It’s quick, accurate, and built on data from thousands of successful custom fits—no appointment needed. For most customers, it’s the ideal starting point for finding your perfect fit.

However, if you find yourself needing additional assistance, don't be afraid to shoot us an email.

Do you offer fabric swatches for review?

We’re happy to send swatches so you can see and feel the fabrics in person and ensure you're making the right decision. To request them, just email a list of the fabrics you're interested in to Concierge@blacklapel.com.

Please note that we may not have all fabrics available as swatches due to the nature of our inventory and the fact that some products are limited-run.

Yes, we can absolutely help with that!

If you're looking for a customization that isn't currently listed on our site, just reach out to us. We frequently accommodate special requests—including unique fabrics, styling details, and design tweaks—and are happy to explore options with you.

Please note that custom requests may require additional time for sourcing or production, so we recommend reaching out early if you’re working on a deadline.

What lapel / collar / etc. should I choose?

Great question! This is the stuff we live for.

Styling choices like lapels, collars, and other design details are highly personal, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. That’s why we have menswear experts ready to assist.

Whether you're dressing for a big event, updating your wardrobe, or just refining your personal style, we’re happy to provide guidance tailored to your needs, preferences, and occasions. Just reach out!

What customizations do you offer?

We offer a curated selection of the most up-to-date and timeless customization options—from lapels and linings to button stance, pocket styles, and more—carefully chosen to balance modern style with classic tailoring. Try customizing any product on our site and you'll see!

That said, because we own and operate our own factory, we have the flexibility to go beyond what's listed. If you’re looking for something specific or more personalized, just let us know—we’re happy to accommodate unique tastes whenever possible.

Can you replicate a style from a photo or garment I send?

Yes, we can often replicate a style from a photo or garment you send—within reason. While exact matches aren't always possible, we’re happy to review and let you know what we can do.

Please note, there are often additional costs for custom designs, so reach out to us for a quote.

Products & Pricing

What garments do you offer?

We specialize in custom menswear, including suits, tuxedos, blazers, vests, dress pants, and dress shirts—all made-to-order and built to your exact measurements and style preferences.

Do you offer casual clothing (e.g., chinos, overshirts, casual suits)?

Not yet—but many custom items like chinos, knitwear, and accessories are actively in development. We’re working on expanding our casual offerings, so stay tuned.

Do you carry seasonal or limited-edition fabrics?

Yes, we do. Many of our fabrics, especially seasonal selections for suits and shirts, are limited run. If you see something you like, we recommend ordering before it's gone.

I ordered items in a specific fabric years ago. Can I reorder the same thing?

We’re happy to try, but there are some important limitations to keep in mind.

Many mills discontinue fabrics over time, and even when a fabric is technically still available, there can be noticeable differences from one bolt to another. In most cases, anything more than a couple of years old is very difficult (if not impossible) to source again. That said, we're always happy to look into it and offer the closest alternative or a similar new fabric.

What shipping services do you use?

Most expedited orders are shipped directly from our workshop to you via DHL or FedEx, depending on which carrier offers the best speed and value at the time of dispatch.

Standard shipping (used for our small order shipments), on the other hand, are sent in bulk to our Boston hub and then re-shipped individually to you through USPS.

Is shipping free?

Yes, shipping is free worldwide, including many international destinations. However, international conditions and availability of shipping partners may limit the countries we're able to ship to.

For orders under $200, shipping is free, but you may notice additional lead time as your order is likely to be rerouted through our US hub rather than shipping directly to you.

What is the turnaround time for an order?

Most orders are delivered in 4–6 weeks. Rush options are available for an additional fee if you're working with a tight deadline.

Do you offer rush orders?

Yes, we do. Rush production is available for a fee. However, if this is your first order, please note that we can’t guarantee a perfect fit right away due to limited time for alterations before your event.

Can I change or cancel my order after it’s placed?

Due to our fast production timelines, you typically have about 2 hours to modify or cancel your order after placing it. Please email us before or immediately after checkout if anything needs to be adjusted.

To ensure timely delivery, we purchase all fabrics for your order upfront. If you cancel any unproduced items for which fabric has already been secured, you’ll be charged a fee equal to the cost of those materials.

Are your items subject to tariffs or duties?

In most cases, no. Because we ship our orders Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), typically you won’t be charged duties or import taxes on arrival.

However, it is the recipient’s responsibility to understand and manage any fees associated with importing their purchase, as customs policies can vary by country and are beyond our control.

I got charged duties and taxes on my order. What gives?

While most of our shipments avoid duties, customs policies vary by country and are ultimately beyond our control, even when shipped Delivery Duty Paid (DDP).

Occasionally, a local customs office may apply charges depending on how they assess your package, but it is ultimately your responsibility to understand the rules and regulations of importing your purchases, and to pay for those charges.
