This week is punctuated by a day that has many guys scrambling to figure out how to come up with a way to wow their sweethearts. You’re not “most guys” though. You come correct when Valentine’s Day rolls around (pssst…if your record is less than stellar in this department, we’ve got some good date ideas for you). And, of course, you want to look good in the process.

Start with a blazer that’s got a little attitude (read: pattern) like this Cobble Hill Houndstooth. Pair it with a pink shirt because real men wear pink (and it’s also a sharp way to highlight the Valentine’s Day theme of this outfit). A pair of simple chinos balances out all of the visual stimulation up top. Don’t sleep on the shoes and the socks. Make sure the socks have some personality, like these solid burgundy ones that pull together the red theme of this outfit, and give your shoes a shine before you step out.

So you planned a little stay-cation for just the two of you. Smart move. Instead of the briefcase, carry a weekender bag to work and pack your overnight essentials along with your usual work stuff. Plus, pack a little something extra for when you reach your destination. Amp up the ambiance in your hotel room with a Mini Jambox loaded with tunes to set the mood. Start with this track by singer, songwriter and stylish gent who’s been known to rock a Black Lapel suit on stage, AC

Solid Charcoal SuitLet’s say you made the mistake of scheduling a full day of client meetings on Valentine’s Day and the look above is a bit too casual. You’ve got to be all business during the day but you want to “get down to business” later. How do you spice up a suit? Here’s how to take a charcoal gray suit (pictured at right), a foundation piece in any man’s wardrobe, and turn it from the boardroom to date night.

  • Wear a pink shirt. As noted above, real men wear pink. Pink is a great complement to this heavy dark gray.
  • Ditch the tie. Nothing loosens up a business suit look quicker than an open collar.
  • Swap pocket squares. A stiff, square-folded white might work for the office, but for after hours, try something with a little more color, like this pink beauty from Turnbull & Asser.
