How to Wear Khaki
While “khaki” has become somewhat of an American umbrella term for any type of non-denim cotton trousers, khaki is in actuality a family of beige, tan and brown colors that go well beyond just dress slacks.
Khaki is a subtle, earthy tone that many guys find intimidating (outside of the ubiquitous khaki pant, of course). Khaki shirts, suits and jackets can feel a little ambiguous in terms of what colors they match with best. though in truth khaki is a super versatile color that pairs up well with much of your existing wardrobe.
Shirts
Khaki shirts go exceptionally well with navy chinos or dress trousers. Grey chinos and any shade of denim will also pair well. The main rule here is to avoid light-to-mid brown pants, which can make your khaki look more tonal and washed out.
Outerwear
For khaki outerwear such as blazers, coats and shirt jackets, the same color-matching rules apply. Layer your khaki outerwear with lighter colors (white or light blue shirt) darker solids (navy or burgundy shirt) or go a bit more bold with darker plaid as a bottom layer.
Suiting
Khaki suits are a staple of the summer wedding season and a great three-season alternative to other lighter colored suits (like light gray). White and light blue shirts go best with the khaki suit, but you can add a bit more contrast with some darker colors (navy, burgundy) as well. Black shoes are doable, but brown shoes that are a shade or two darker than the suit color itself will be ideal.
